Finding a financial planning expert can be tough because you need to find that person that will truly be interested in helping you plan for the future and not just someone who wants the business. There are three types of designations so you should understand each one to help you in your search.
There is the Certified Financial Planner, similar to a CPS, who must have two years of training and must also pass a test before he can do business. This test takes ten hours, given over two days and a passing grade must be earned. Then there is the Chartered Financial Consultants and these people have taken various exams and had real life experience and this area is more for the insurance field.
Then there is the Personal Financial Specialist and are members of the National Association of Personal Financial Adviser’s. For any of these three designations, three years of experience is required. The smaller advisers are not regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission so you will need to research these on your own if you choose one.
